Four Simple Ways to Raise Independent Kids

Knowing when and how much independence to give a child can be difficult, but allowing kids the right amount of appropriate independence makes for an independent and responsible adult. There are simple ways in which you can gradually give children the authority to make their own decisions, or to be responsible for certain tasks and events. These five simple ways allow you to give your kids the freedom they need in a safe way.

Give them chores

This is a win-win situation, as in, a routine of cleanliness is established meaning less work for the parents, and your child learns how to take care of themselves. Beginning young can make all the difference to a child complying with chores and so give younger children one or two tasks to begin with such as putting their dish in the sink when finished, and tidying away toys when not in use. As they grow older, increase the chores, starting with keeping their own personal space, the bedroom tidy, and moving on to vacuuming and cleaning the communal areas of the home.

Get a pet

This is a serious decision to make and not one to take lightly, but if you are certain you can take care of an animal, and can afford to, then a pet is a terrific way to instil a sense of responsibility in a growing child. There will be chores associated with pets, so ensure it is your child, and not you that do these chores daily. However, don’t be tempted to surprise a child with a pet, and go through all the extra responsibilities your son or daughter will have if they get a pet before you make a decision. Give them time

Most parents make the mistake of doing everything for their child, despite know that the chid can do it for herself, all because they are running late and in a rush. Allow for extra time and give your child plenty of notice for when you want them to be dressed. Tell them that you know they are a “big girl” or big boy” now and that they wouldn’t want Mummy or Daddy helping them get dressed anymore. Encourage them to dress themselves at weekends so they are ready to do it independently on school days.

Let them hang out at home with their friends

As children turn into teenagers they need some trust and privacy. Before they are old enough to venture out on their own or out with their friends, prepare them, and yourself by allowing them to hang out at home without you supervising them constantly. Be in the house, but allow your son or daughter to play host and prepare snacks and drinks for their friends, rather than you. This will make them feel like a grown-up and will also teach the importance of hospitality and food preparation.

Make sure your home is wheel friendly!

If your little one requires a wheelchair to get around, then creating access for their chair, such as a disability lift and other mobility devices is essential. Keeping House With A Baby Inside Of It

When I bought my first little bundle of joy home, I realized a few things very quickly. My husband and I had never been clean freaks, but we found that with a teeny baby in the house, we were putting in three times the cleaning effort for half of the result.
